6 easy ways to make your marriage proposal unforgettable

marriage proposal

When it comes time to popping the question, the moment has to be just right. Adding a little creative flair to the occasion can make a proposal even that much more memorable. Don’t roll your eyes. Not all “creative” proposals have to be corny. The following tips and ideas will help heighten the moment. After all, don’t you want a proposal story you can tell your grandkids about?

  1. Make it a surprise… but don’t be surprised: If you plan on doing something special for your proposal, be sure that she/he will say yes. You don’t want to be caught popping the question in front of thousands at the baseball game and she, gasp!, says no. At the same time, she/he shouldn’t know the proposal is coming. An element of surprise is key to all great marriage proposals.
  1. Go down on one knee: This may seem obvious, but these days most men don’t get on one knee when they propose. If your potential spouse has any affinity toward chivalry, then don’t be afraid to take a knee. The moment you drop down, her face will light up. Tears will probably flow before you even say the words. It may seem corny, but her friends will be jealous when they hear you went down on one knee.
  1. Public display of affection: Proposals in public are a classic way to make the moment memorable. Remember, the setting is always more important than the cost. Always consider a public place that has personal significance to one or both of you. Think about where you first met, your first date, her favorite theme park, or maybe even pop the question at her work. Or create new memory in fabulous Las Vegas.
  1. Public, but more private: Some people may not be game for a proposal in front of hundreds of people. If that’s the case with your significant other, you can dial it down a notch with a more secluded proposal in public place. Try hiding the ring atop the dessert ordered at her favorite restaurant, or ask at a family get-together (that will certainly score points with her parents).
  1. Capture it on photo: A surefire way to forever save the memory is to capture the proposal on camera. This is not as difficult as it may seem. Set up a general photo session for you and your significant other — you know, just some “nice photos to have of each other.” Tell the photographer beforehand that you’ll bepopping the question, and you’ll be sure to get great photos of the reaction.
  1. Play off any mistakes: It’s easy to get nervous during your proposal. You may stumble over some words. If you’re planning something elaborate, there’s bound to be a few flubs. Keep on going with your proposal, and don’t get discouraged. Sometimes these “mistakes” end up being the most memorable part of the experience.
